How You Can Help Your Kittens Thrive

When you bring a kitten into your home, you’re not just adopting a little fur ball…you are becoming their teacher, guide, and safety net as they learn about the world. Those first months are critical for shaping your kitten’s future, helping them grow into secure, well-adjusted cats.

At Joybound People & Pets, we believe that Kitten Kindergarten isn’t just cute, it’s essential. Early socialization helps kittens feel safe, lowers stress in new situations, and builds their confidence so they can adapt to new environments or situations with ease.

As Dr. Wailani Sung, Joybound’s Senior Director of Animal Admissions and Wellbeing, shares:

“Socialization is one of the greatest gifts you can give a kitten. Each new, positive experience helps build a foundation of confidence, reducing fear and stress as they grow into adulthood. It’s not just about raising a friendly kitten—it’s about setting them up for a lifetime of resilience and well-being.”

Each Kitten Is an Individual

While kittens may arrive in litters, they will likely be adopted individually. That’s why it’s important to work with each kitten solo, exposing them to new people, objects, and sounds one-on-one whenever possible. This helps them adapt to life’s many surprises, from vacuum cleaners to vet visits, making them less fearful and more prepared for life’s adventures.

Of course, there are protocols to keep all animals in your home safe and healthy. Ideally the kitten should initially be in a clean contained area so that they can slowly acclimate to the home and also give other pets in the home Pe some time and space to adjust to a new furry family member. Even during this period, you can introduce new sounds, smells, and gentle handling to continue their learning journey.

You Are Their First Teacher

Think of yourself as your kitten’s kindergarten teacher, offering safe, positive experiences that build resilience and trust. Like any good teacher, you’ll want to pay attention to their comfort level, go slow, and adjust as needed. If your kitten shows fear (retreating, shaking, hissing), add distance, change your environment, or pause the session to maintain a positive experience.

To help your kitten grow into a confident, curious cat, aim to expose them to five new experiences each day, pairing each with treats and gentle praise. Try handling their paws, ears, and mouth, picking them up, brushing them, teaching them to wear a harness, taking them out in a stroller or wrapping them with a towel. Let them meet a variety of people and hear every day sounds like doorbells and vacuums and encourage them to explore different surfaces safely. By taking it slow and keeping experiences positive, you’re helping your kitten build trust in you and in the world around them.
